Our Co-op Experience

My colleague and I were employed as Volunteer Social Media Analysts for a not-for-profit organization known as Journey to Diversity Workplaces (J2DW) from October 2017 to mid-December of the same year. We are so thankful to have had this co-op opportunity available to us through our Research Analyst program at Georgian College. J2DW first caught our attention because it provided us with the ability to work from home and communicate with one another using different types of multimedia tools. We were motivated to work with an organization that we found so inspiring and shared similar perspectives on business ethics as we do.

The time we spent working for J2DW has granted us the opportunity to build and enhance our skill set that we will utilize throughout our career. There was no designated team lead within our social media analyst team, therefore, we approached each assignment with a very democratic perspective. Communication was a crucial factor to our success, as each member would offer his or her thoughts and opinions on the best approach to each task. Through this method, we were able to understand the importance of clarity on tasks at hand, allowing everyone to focus towards the same goal. Each member of the team had specialties and was able to provide a unique perspective on how to best approach each task. We held one another and ourselves accountable for assigned sections that enabled us to further develop our teamwork and communication skills.

After completing our co-op, we can honestly say that we have learned and developed new skill sets. Some of our assignments required collective work and at times it was challenging because we were not in the same city. Setting a plan, sticking to it and holding one another accountable while working remotely was not an easy task. My colleague and I had the privilege of working together prior to this experience, which was a great asset to the team. We had the opportunity to complete diverse tasks, learn new programs, problem solve and overcome challenges.

J2DW is an organization bent on setting the standard for diversity in the workplace and has been spreading its message and gathering new followers every day. By focusing on issues that influence the Canadian workforce, it is relatable knowledge that both employers and employees should be aware of. Subjects such as labour, education, and equality are things that are becoming more readily spoken about in public and J2DW is a resource bent on ensuring that employees know their rights. J2DW wants to set a workplace standard for equal treatment that will spread to other businesses, illustrating that equality is attainable.

Volunteer Social media analyst

This is a volunteer co-op position for a post-secondary student.

Social media analysts are responsible for creating and maintaining Journey to Diversity Workplaces (J2DW) presence on social media sites, which include Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, and Mastodon, as well as any company blogs. Analysts are in charge of increasing the overall exposure of a company though search engine optimization (SEO) and by finding ways to use these keywords in marketing strategies employed by tJ2DW. They also monitor emerging social media tools to see how they can be incorporated into J2DW’s business, marketing and public relation strategies.

Duties

Social media analysts use their creativity and marketing skills to help generate brand awareness, sales, and promote customer service through the social media networks. An analyst will study trends in social media, research popular social media platforms, study emerging social media tools and observe how often those platforms and tools are used.

For new efforts, crowdfunding, and fundraising social media analysts will study the audience that J2DW is attempting to reach and offers us plans on how social media will work best for us and our business model. Analysts may write up reports for J2DW and team members to show them the strategies available to them. They may also alert us about any potential problems or concerns that may arise.

Qualifications

* Basic knowledge of Canva

* Previous experience in social media/marketing

* Currently enrolled in a marketing or social media program at the post-secondary level

* Excellent oral and written communication skills

* Excellent customer service skillsExperience with social media analytics, including Google Analytics and Facebook Insights

This is a volunteer job, generally done from your home office on a schedule approved by your Manager and your fellow team members. You will meet with your team in person or virtually on an agreed-upon schedule and will meet in-person with your manager every two weeks, or so. In-person meetings with your Manager will be in Barrie, Ontario.

Volunteer Board recruitment analyst

Job Summary:

  • Perform research on various methods of recruiting people to a non-profit volunteer board of directors
  • Write copy and perform tasks suited to recruiting people to a non-profit volunteer board of directors
  • Write material/blog posts to post on the website
  • Assess the marketing techniques of J2DW by the use of the exposure of their website.
  • Other tasks assigned as job progresses.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Weekly meetings with other members of the team to brainstorm ideas for furthering J2DW’s efforts.
  • Write appealing material to post on their website.
  • Assess current marketing techniques and the efficiency of such techniques by performing quantitative analysis.
  • Recruit volunteers for J2DW’s non-profit board
  • Propose changes to J2DW’s board recruitment processes

Required Skills:

  • Writing skills for appealing material for their website
  • People skills
  • Research skills
  • How to be efficient when marketing for raising funds.
  • Skills to come up with best practices for J2DW’s board recruitment efforts

Transportation and Housing: This is a volunteer job, generally done from your home office on a schedule approved by your Manager and your fellow team members. Research and Writing Intern – Volunteer Job Posting

Journey to Diversity Workplaces is looking to hire a co-op student/intern to assist in research and essay writing.

There are two positions.

This is an unpaid position and would be ideal for a student wanting to work from home, build a portfolio and gain some great business experience. We try to tailor these positions to the needs of the student and their educational program.

Interns and/or co-op students will be responsible for assigned activities and need to be able to complete assignments with minimal supervision. The student will also be expected to attend any meetings and events.

Qualifications:

  • Self-starter, motivated to succeed and has a ‘can do’ attitude
  • Knowledgeable about area of focus
  • Knowledge in APA style
  • Creativity skills are essential
  • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work well under pressure
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team setting
  • Proficient in Libre Office and it’s word/spreadsheet/powerpoint equivalents

Salary: Unpaid
Shift required: 20 – 40 hours per week, flexible hours
